Come paddle with us...

The Ocean River Paddling Club is designed for people who want to paddle performance kayaks and canoes for fitness and competition. The Club is located below Ocean River Sports in Victoria's Upper Harbour. Paddlers can reach the open waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca in 15 minutes or choose the calmer waters of the inland Gorge waterway. To find out more about the club, visit the links to the left or contact Ocean River Sports.

General Announcements

  • Programming Update
    • Mens/Womens Program Update
The womens program paddle runs Saturdays at 8:00-10:00 am and is a hugh success. Remember, come down early to ensure that you have a space in an OC6. The mens program runs at the same time on Sundays. We could use a few more participants in this one to ensure getting another canoe out. Although one aim is to help coaches field racing crews, racing is not a requirement and recreational paddlers are more than welcome to attend. We are presently looking at expanding the program to a second week-night.

    • Victoria Youth Paddling Club
VYPC will be going back into full paddling swing starting in April with three groupings: Explorer, Junior Racing and Racing programs. There is a wide range of activities and races planned. If you have a young person who might like to try something new, then VYPC is the place to start. Paddlers are introduced to a number of different kinds of canoes and kayaks. The programs cater to a wide range of ages and skill levels. For more information, you can check out full details at www.vypc.ca

    • Catalina Update
The meeting to go over the initial details and requirements for fielding crews for the Catalina Crossing was held in early March. The notes prepared for the meeting can be downloaded here. If you were unable to attend the meeting but are interested in racing Catalina, contact Cindy.

The training program for the March-April will be emailed separately to crews/individuals.

    • Don't Paddle? Want to Learn How?
ORPC can run specialized "Learn to Outrigger" classes with the aim of suiting your busy schedule. If you have five friends interested in learning how to paddle and steer an OC6, then please contact Ocean River Sports and they will forward your request for information onto the Club Commodore You can reach ORS at 381-4233.

  • Racing Update
It is the beginning of a new racing season and the local races are in full swing. Wake Up the Gorge is on April 12th and Brotchie May 4th. Please ensure that for Brotchie, you have booked your canoes in the appropriate manner.

There marathon event, ICF-style (but all small boats acceptable) being run out of GRPC. Details will be distributed once they are finalized.

I would like to thank all the crews that raced Crazy 8 for the spirit of commraderie before, during and after the event. A very big thank you goes out to NCKC for hosting the event and for putting on such a great show.

Kanuhakit was held in February and we had one womens, one mixed and one junior crew racing this event. It was a great day with some fabulous racing (and some spectacular buoy turns). Congratulations to the crews and to GRPC for a wonderful event.

  • Clinic Update
The sprint clinic held at ORPC in February was a huge success with both days being practically full. A huge thanks to Jason Guille and the Victoria Marina for the use of the Sunset Room and for Ocean River Sports for the use of the breeze way and the staff for being techno-geeks when we couldn't get the video to work. Thank you as well to Waters Edge for their enthusiasm and for all the lessons learned.

Not that I'm keen on holding another clinic right away, but if come the fall, there is still budget money to do another CORA sponsored event, please let me know if there is something specific you would like.

  • Sacremento World Sprints 2008
If you are still interested in participating in the IVF World Sprints, please register you intent on the CORA website under the sprints banner. This will allow the Area coordinator to be aware of you and to email you the pertinent information. Even if you are only at a stage where you are considering competing, you need to register. I sit as the Vancouver Island Representative to the sprint council so I should be able to answer the questions you have. BUT, the first step is to REGISTER! The time trials will be held in Penticton in late May and are presently set to coincide with Duel in the Desert.

Presently ORPC has several individuals, one senior masters womens club-crew and one junior club-crew vying for spots on the National Team.
