ORPC Time Trial Rules

  • Sign up will be available in the clubhouse approximately 2 weeks before the TT
  • All paddlers must sign up in advance as there are a limited number of boats per heat
  • No heat-jumping unless you have arranged a swap with another paddler
  • A fourth heat will only be added if there is demand
  • Short Course: 3.64 km/ Long Course: 7.28 km/ SuperSized: ?? paddlers choice
  • Paddlers may choose their weapons, but small boats only (OC1, OC2, surfski, K1, K2, marathon, etc.)
  • If you are using a club boat other than a OC1 or OC2, please book the boat yourself through the boat bookings, using the blue colour to indicate TT. We will only be block booking OC1s and OC2s
  • Use of club boats will be allocated by the TT organizer to ensure boat rotation amongst paddlers is fair.
  • Paddlers who race their own boats can choose their heat
  • Starts are staggered at 30 second intervals and ordered from slowest to fastest
  • Paddlers in heat one will show up 30 minutes in advance to rig their boats and warm up. Paddlers in the last heat put boats away. Paddlers will be asked to assist with timing of heats before/after them.
  • THIS IS A TIME TRIAL= the race course is controlled and will remain relatively consistent through the series so that you can track your progress. Distance may increase by adding laps onto the course.
  • PFDs must be on the boat or on the person, leashes are optional
  • The TT organizers reserve the right to cancel or reschedule the TT due to inclement paddling conditions or concerns about safety

Rules for Non-ORPC Paddlers Participating in Time Trials

  1. Must provide your own boat.
  2. You MUST sign up in advance or at least notify the organizer. There will be a separate sign up sheet in the ORPC clubhouse. I can not guarantee you will be in the first heat or the heat you want (see below).
  3. All TT course rules apply to ALL paddlers, regardless of club affiliation. Bridge lines must be obeyed.
  4. Please familiarize yourself with the course before hand. The race course is on the ORPC website.
  5. This is a time trial for ORPC paddlers and is designed for paddlers to monitor their progress. It is not a typical race. Lines must be respected and we discourage wake riding. You can not cut paddlers lines or squeeze them off. When you pass a paddler, please do so in a fashion that causes minimal disruption to that paddler.
We can accommodate only so many paddlers per heat and ORPC paddlers get dibbs on which heat they want to paddle in. This is due to time limitations put onto the heat so that the TT can be completed in a timely fashion with minimal changes in water conditions.

The Paddling and Race Development Program

The Paddling and Race Development Program is open to all club members looking to improve their technical skills and fundamental knowledge of outrigger canoes. It is open to individuals or crews interested in developing their paddling skills, whether their goals are competitive racing or recreational paddling. Skill and knowledge development will be taught on a broad basis but individual or crew program development will be accommodated. In addition to the OC6, development will include paddling in small boats (OC1, OC2).

Technical expertise will be brought into the program from both within the club and also with clinics hosted by coaches and performance paddlers outside the club.

Recent clinic include the small boat pool huli session and the OC6 rigging clinic. Future clinics may include: navigation, tides and currents, and water change racing

This is an ongoing program that that will span the racing season for 2005. It presently has no additional costs, but some program needs that arise will be shared amongst the program participants. Participants are required to be ORPC members and CORA members. The program does not include racing fees or transportation fees for the boats.

The time is Sundays from 1-3:30. This is a structured program environment with goals and objective set for each session. Although weekly attendance isn’t mandatory, it is highly advised. Technically, this is a drop-in type of program but the more you drop-in, the more consistent your training can be.
